Jake Fromm - Commanders QB

Despite many expecting otherwise, Jake Fromm saw off the challenge of undrafted free agent Tim DeMorat pretty convincingly for the No. 3 quarterback spot. However, his place on the 53-man roster is far from assured.

Sam Howell is going to be under center for the Washington Commanders for their Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals. The team also picked up a dependable understudy and strong veteran in Jacoby Brissett if their second-year-pro cannot meet expectations.

This is dependent on whether the Commanders plan to take through three quarterbacks onto their 53-man roster. Moving forward with two gives a problem position group another option, although the returning NFL ruling that allows for an emergency signal-caller to be activated on game days if injury strikes could tip the scales in Fromm's favor.

The former Georgia star is firmly behind the top two quarterbacks. But a strong preseason where he's expected to get plenty of action might be enough to convince Ron Rivera that three signal-callers are the way forward.

If Fromm doesn't do enough to make the team initially, the Commanders would likely attempt to stash him on the practice squad with protected status. However, the 2020 fifth-rounder will be looking to leave no doubt by shining during the only game-day-type environment he's likely to see in 2023.
