4 Commanders players facing uncertain futures at 2024 training camp

Alex Akingbulu - Commanders OT
The Washington Commanders have some severe concerns attached to their offensive tackle options. That's nothing new to those who followed the team's plight under Ron Rivera's unsuccessful four-year tenure, but fans were expecting new general manager Adam Peters to address this issue with more urgency.
Andrew Wylie and Cornelius Lucas were the team's starting tackle tandem over early offseason workouts. This doesn't inspire much confidence, although there's hope that third-round selection Brandon Coleman can develop quickly en route to manning blindside responsibilities to start at some stage during the 2024 campaign.
Washington's depth options don't look great either. Trent Scott is a journeyman backup but nothing more. The Commanders have no idea what they have in last year's fourth-rounder Braeden Daniels, but his woeful transition and subsequent injury complication that ruled him out for the entire 2023 season means the jury is still out.
One player who's gone relatively overlooked is Alex Akingbulu. He's entering his third season with the Commanders but dipped in and out of the roster frequently. The former Fresno State star suited up twice for Washington last time around. However, this came with nothing more than four special teams snaps.
The Commanders' coaching staff are giving Akingbulu another opportunity to showcase what he could potentially bring to the table. That won't be easy based on how things have unfolded for the edge presence so far. A huge effort is needed during drills and when reps come his way during Washington's training camp to propel himself into consideration.
Not many are holding out much hope that Akingbulu can attain this feat. The player is confident that improvements can arrive under more accomplished coaches. But his situation remains precarious until further notice.
Peters is harboring no sentiment to his decision-making process. Roster spots will be given on merit with no emotional attachment to any player. That gives Akingbulu a fighting chance, but making a strong start is crucial.
