Michael Davis - Commanders CB

Adam Peters didn't do much to help the cornerback room this offseason. Second-round pick Mike Sainristil was the marquee arrival, but he's seen more as a slot presence rather than someone who could man outside responsibilities at the next level.

The Washington Commanders believe they can get more from Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Benjamin St-Juste under the accomplished teachings of head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. That's a big gamble, but one Peters is making unless another dependable option is acquired beforehand.

The Commanders have high hopes for Michael Davis. He joined the ranks in free agency on a one-year deal worth $3.57 million and might assist in some capacity. However, some concerns must be alleviated as a matter of extreme urgency.

Davis regressed considerably with the Los Angeles Chargers last season. The former BYU standout gave up 65.2 percent of targets thrown in his direction for 801 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. His 119.2 passer rating when targeted and 12.7% of his tackles missed were other damning indictments of his subpar production.

It came as no surprise to see the Chargers go in a different direction. Davis should be highly motivated to silence his increasing doubters in a different environment. Quinn and Whitt are renowned developers of defensive backs. If they see something in the veteran, there needs to be a level of trust attached from a fan perspective.

Davis has experience on his side, which helps. There's also a significant opportunity awaiting him in Washington thanks to the questions surrounding St-Juste and Forbes heading into crossroads campaigns for both.

Making every starting rep count during Washington's training camp and displaying assured coverage is a good place to start. Davis' roster spot isn't in great danger unless there's a drastic drop-off in performance levels. But that doesn't detract from the need to respond accordingly after his 2023 efforts that won't live long in the memory.
