4 Commanders players who could be nice surprises in 2024

The Washington Commanders had a conundrum on their hands with Kamren Curl this offseason. His rapid emergence from a seventh-round pick into a productive starter meant a huge payday was the only viable solution to keep him around. As it turned out, no offer for an extended stay came to fruition.
Curl signed a modest deal with the Los Angeles Rams - something the Commanders could have easily afforded in the grand scheme of things. Jeremy Chinn was signed in free agency from the Carolina Panthers, who is seen as a better fit within Dan Quinn's defense as a box safety/linebacker hybrid. That said, it might be worth adding another piece to the backend as an insurance policy if nothing else.
Much will also depend on Percy Butler's development. The former fourth-round pick saw his snaps increase significantly last season thanks in no small part to Darrick Forrest's injury. There were some nice moments, but it remains to be seen whether he gets the same sort of responsibilities under Washington's new coaching staff.
Butler has the athleticism to potentially make a difference. Some deficiencies in coverage must be addressed, but he could end up making a surprising contribution under more accomplished coaches with proven credentials when it comes to helping defensive backs reach or far exceed their expectations.
