Sam Howell - Commanders QB

In some respects, Sam Howell is the embodiment of the new culture within the Washington Commanders since Ron Rivera became head coach. Those in power opted to avoid going after Lamar Jackson or make another big splash this spring - instead having their hat on a former fifth-round pick emerging from obscurity and into a starting role.

Whether Howell can maximize this outstanding opportunity remains to be seen. There are some likable traits that could potentially flourish into something more - but it still represents a major risk given there is such a small sample size in terms of competitive NFL action.

The Commanders saw enough in Howell to end his deeply concerning draft slide in 2022. Rivera also sees enough in the signal-caller to potentially bet his job on.

Howell is transitioning well into the No. 1 role and has the support of his primary playmakers. But Rivera has been eager to keep his feet on the ground with claims of a quarterback competition during Washington's training camp, even if all signs point to the one-time North Carolina stud being the man under center in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.

If Howell puts his undeniable gifts to good use, it will be the biggest Commanders' culture shift imaginable. Especially considering the constant stream of woeful free-agent signings, trades, and draft picks that constantly held the organization back at football's most pivotal position during the Dan Snyder era.
