3 remaining Commanders offseason needs after the 2024 NFL Draft
Commanders have an offensive tackle problem
Andrew Wylie allowed nine sacks from the right tackle position in 2023, which tied for fourth-most in the NFL. On one of the worst offensive lines you will ever see on tape, the veteran somehow managed to stand out at times, and not in a good way.
Having made significant changes on the left side of the line, as well as at the center position with the addition of former Dallas Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz, the Washington Commanders have surprisingly allowed Wylie to remain in position to start once more.
That's without taking into consideration the gamble of placing third-round selection Brandon Coleman as the starting left tackle. He's got quality production and experience in college, but the former TCU star's lack of NFL-caliber length is a concern.
With Sam Cosmi manning the right guard position, the Commanders are one more talented player away from having completely morphed the offensive line into a potentially solid unit. The job should be much easier with Jayden Daniels under center, who has an electrifying dual-threat ability that opposing defenses will be wary of.
The inside of the line has improved. If the competition between Cornelius Lucas and Coleman culminates in a productive blindside presence, then the left side of the protection will have improved. This would leave Wylie in a precarious position, as the weak link in an otherwise decent group.
With his golden touch thus far, general manager Adam Peters is still looking over all of his options to find a potential replacement for Wylie. Surely he knows that all it takes for an NFL offense to crumble is one poor left or right tackle. One could argue that both positions haven't been addressed with enough urgency throughout the offseason.
Despite their issues at cornerback and defensive end, the Commanders should be most concerned about both offensive tackle positions.
