Commanders get run game going

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was the team's leading rusher in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished with almost 100 yards on the ground. But this cannot be the main source of gaining momentum throughout the campaign.

This may not turn out to be true, but I bet that a telling statistic by year's end regarding wins and losses for the Washington Commanders is whether or not Daniels led the team in rushing yards. If they want to be the smash-mouth rushing team we've heard about, then they need to let their two-headed running back duo find their groove.

Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler were the brightest spots on the Commanders' offense last week, despite the numbers put up by the Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU. They both showed it through the air and even on the ground when opportunities arose.

It makes sense why Ekeler only received two carries due to the Commanders playing behind for the whole game. But that shouldn't be the case every week. The veteran did great when he caught the ball, so look for offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to get him more involved as a ball carrier.

Ekeler's gone over 1,500 yards from scrimmage three times in his career. Get him more involved.

Combined with what Robinson can do once he gets going, and added with the threat of Daniels' running abilities, making the ground game a focal point with these three in unison could be what breaks the entire offense open. There is no better time than this week to get this part of the offense going.

To do so while getting back to .500 and starting 1-0 in the division would give the Commanders a lot of confidence going into a Week 3 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.
