Commanders didn't prioritize LB group

The Washington Commanders did go about strengthening their defense this offseason. But once again, the linebacker group was dangerously overlooked by the primary decision-makers.

Considering Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio were both prolific second-level defenders in their own right, it's been almost unbelievable to see a lack of urgency in this key area of the field. The Commanders signed Cole Barton as a direct replacement for Cole Holcomb, but aside from that it was pretty quiet on the recruitment front.

Washington's preference to select two defensive backs to begin the 2023 NFL Draft indicates they might be shifting to more 4-2-5 defensive sets next season. This is something Del Rio did plenty last time around and has the personnel to increase further providing everyone transitions well.

This would leave Barton and Jamin Davis as the two linebacking options in a starting capacity. David Mayo and Khaleke Hudson might see prominent reps, with the Commanders also having the option to install fifth-rounder K.J. Henry in obvious pass-rushing situations.

The Commanders' defensive front will be among the league's best if Chase Young stays healthy. There is also renewed hope that the secondary can make significant strides after solid additions and the scope for growth on the backend where young studs such as Kamren Curl, Darrick Forrest, Jeremy Reaves, and Percy Butler are concerned.

If the linebacking corps cannot meet their end of the bargain and it becomes a weak link, questions will be asked about the team's approach throughout the spring.
