Commanders defensive players staking a claim

Seventh-round selection Andre Jones Jr. has had himself quite the training camp and preseason. This could benefit the Washington Commanders, who are looking to provide depth along the defensive line.

The Commanders suffered plenty of nicks over the last few weeks with the likes of Chase Young and Kendall Fuller. It will be a long season and Washington will be hoping for similar output from their backups in 2023 if their starting options miss time at any stage.

From James Smith-Williams to John Ridgeway, Jones could be the next guy. Has K.J. Henry done enough? Can Percy Butler take a major sophomore leap?

It is very important for this defense to stay intact. If the Commanders keep five defensive backs, it would be a long shot for someone like Henry to make the team.

With cuts coming by Tuesday's deadline, Ron Rivera and staff will be scratching their heads to who makes the team. Some fan favorites who have been a part of the organization for years might find themselves on the roster bubble.

It'll be interesting to see which players step up in Washington's preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals with more time on the field. One big play here or there could make a significant difference for some with fortunes firmly hanging in the balance.
