Commanders could sign Chase Young

Wouldn't this be something?

The Washington Commanders took the difficult decision to trade Montez Sweat and Chase Young before the 2023 deadline. This was done to acquire additional draft capital and avoid giving the defensive end duo long-term extensions. Both were out of contract, so the moves were made with long-term planning in mind.

Sweat got a lucrative deal soon after his trade to the Chicago Bears became official. The San Francisco 49ers adopted a wait-and-see approach with Young, who flashed promise opposite Nick Bosa as Kyle Shanahan's men won the NFC conference. Unfortunately, they fell short in the Super Bowl once again.

The Niners have one more year of Brock Purdy's seventh-round rookie deal before the quarterback is extension-eligible. This makes extending any remaining top performers difficult with the money already allocated to many. It doesn't seem like Young did enough to earn a big financial commitment before free agency, although nothing has been ruled out entirely.

Young never reached the heights of his generational potential in Washington. He became disillusioned under Ron Rivera and had his fair share of injury concerns. Could the presence of Dan Quinn and his exceptional coaching staff be enough to tempt the former Ohio State star back if there was interest?

Possibly, but there's also a good chance bridges have been burned despite his potential within a new defensive system.
