3 Commanders players on the hot seat entering Week 4 at Eagles
By Dean Jones
Antonio Gibson - Commanders RB
Nobody is questioning the talent at Antonio Gibson's disposal. The running back has a 1,000-yard rushing campaign under his belt and remains a significant threat out of the backfield, but ball security continues to be a major complication that doesn't seem to be getting any better.
Gibson fumbled once again in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills - the latest in a series of turnovers that can be blamed squarely on the former Memphis standout. It doesn't seem like the Washington Commanders are going to give up on him just yet, but the Philadelphia Eagles will be looking to smash the football from his grasp whenever touches come his way this weekend.
These concerns are the last thing Gibson needs right now. He's lost the No. 1 role to Brian Robinson Jr. and the player is also looking for a new deal with his contract up for renewal in 2024.
We'll find out more about how much trust remains in Gibson at the Eagles. If Eric Bienieny transitions away from the 2020 third-round selection in favor of allocating more touches to Robinson or perhaps even rookie Chris Rodriguez Jr., it's a sign of how things might play out for the remainder of 2023 before the Commanders go in a different direction next spring.
If Gibson is given the benefit of the doubt, he has to produce. More importantly, he must not cough up another takeaway in the face of such a physical, opportunistic defense.
