3 changes Commanders' coaching staff must consider in Week 2 vs. NY Giants
Commanders must get creative to generate pressure
The Washington Commanders had one sack at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though they got some pressure on other occasions, mainly by either bringing the house or by one of the two defensive tackles causing havoc, it wasn't enough.
In short, they made Baker Mayfield look like Tom Brady, which he most certainly isn't. He does have a stellar group of receivers to throw to, but the Commanders cannot let this trend continue moving forward.
Now the Commanders face off against Daniel Jones, who has made a history of dominating the Commanders throughout his career. Being that he is a better runner than Mayfield, this could cause serious problems for the defense if they are unable to generate pressure.
Daniels could extend plays and get his offense going. Getting creative to generate pressure and turning opportunities into sacks is the crucial element above all else.
Although Clelin Ferrell was the lone Commanders player with a sack in Week 1, his performance overall was disappointing. He struggled against the run and didn't generate much other pressure. This has been the hallmark of his career after becoming a top-five draft selection.
The Commanders could bring in Jamin Davis. He is a better football player. Despite his flaws, he plays with energy. He's also made tremendous improvement with his position change to an edge rusher in such a short period.
If this is going to be a real thing moving forward, then the Commanders should consider going ahead and seeing everything that Davis can do from a more prominent role. Give him more in-game experience at the position. That is how he will grow and it's how general manager Adam Peters will get a broader assessment of his capabilities moving forward.
In the meantime, who knows, maybe it would even give the Commanders their best chance to generate some more pressure and get more than one sack this week. That's going to be crucial in pursuit of piling more misery on the Giants' much-maligned quarterback.
