Commanders trade offer No. 3

One of the biggest reasons why the San Francisco 49ers are reluctant to trade wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk - aside from his immense talent - is the move does nothing to enhance their chances of hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2024. This is a team in win-now mode. It's also the final year of quarterback Brock Purdy's seventh-round rookie deal before he becomes eligible for a contract extension.

Striking while the iron is hot. That's what the Niners are looking to do after hitting the jackpot with Purdy. They've come close on a few occasions. Those in power this is the year they can finally get over the hump and secure another ring.

Moving Aiyuk for nothing more than draft picks damages their chances considerably. But if the Washington Commanders or someone else were to offer another wide receiver as part of the transaction, it could sweeten the pot.

Hypothetically speaking, the Commanders might be willing to offer a second-round selection in 2025 and Jahan Dotson. The former Penn State star has been solid enough over his first two seasons in the league. However, it's not quite what Washington had in mind when they took the pass-catcher at No. 16 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Hopes remain high that Dotson can finally enjoy the breakout season most were anticipating when Eric Bieniemy took over play-calling duties. At the same time, parting ways with the player to land Aiyuk is a tempting proposition considering the obvious upgrade attached.

This would also give the Niners an athletic pass-catcher to fill the void. Dotson's elusiveness after the catch and ability to be used in motion frequently make him a decent fit within Kyle Shanahan's offensive scheme. It also gives them two years of production before the time comes for a potential extension.

Again, these are just suggestions. The Commanders haven't given up on Dotson by any stretch of the imagination. But if the Niners ask for him in return if trade talks surrounding Aiyuk resume, it's something to seriously consider.
