Of course, the Washington Commanders would like to have Tress Way as its punter. But he will cost almost $4 million next season.

Way is one of the highest-paid punters in the league. The question is whether you want to devote that kind of money to a punter when you are rebuilding most of your roster. The Commanders may decide they could find someone almost as good at about half the price.

Joey Slye is not necessarily gone. It’s clear what the kicker is and isn’t at this point. Big leg - inconsistent.

At the very least, he will face competition. This means he is not a lock, although he has come out on the other side of kicking battles smiling before.

Camaron Cheeseman’s base salary in 2023 was higher than Sam Howell’s. He has struggled and probably won't be back in 2024. Jamison Crowder was a nice fill-in as a punt returner, but I expect the Commanders will be looking for a younger option.

That’s about it.

That’s 18 players on the current roster who I consider locks for 2024. That’s normally the sign of a team in disarray. Or in transition. The Commanders are both.

Fortunately, the Commanders will have the draft capital and cap space to restock a lot of the roster. They just have to make a lot of smart decisions.

Fingers crossed.
