Offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles always flattered to deceive throughout his career with the Washington Commanders. He was given countless chances to cement his status in the starting lineup, but injuries would always seem to crop up whenever any semblance of momentum was being generated.
Unfortunately for the player, it seems like this trend is continuing in a different environment.
By all accounts, Charles has been a real success story for the Carolina Panthers this summer. He's getting plenty of work with the first-string offensive line, with starting left guard Damien Lewis out with an injury, and he's caught the eye. However, the former LSU standout is now dealing with a calf injury once again.

Charles had several calf problems in Washington. It's an issue that keeps surfacing, and it seems to come up at the worst moments. The severity of this particular problem hasn't been disclosed yet, but missing any considerable time now could potentially have grave consequences.
This time, there is no real safety net for Charles.
He is fighting for a roster spot in Carolina after impressing enough to get another reserve/futures contract after the 2026 campaign. That was a big confidence boost at an important time, but the margin for error remains razor-thin.
The Panthers probably wanted to see Charles operating in the preseason before making a final judgment. That might still happen at some stage, but it's unlikely to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game against the Arizona Cardinals. If he is out for anything longer than that, he's got a big problem.
Washington eventually gave up on Charles when the new regime came on board. He got enough opportunities under previous head coach Ron Rivera, and he didn't take them. Dan Quinn and Adam Peters weren't exactly impressed, and the lineman has had trouble sticking around anywhere else.
And now, after there was a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel in Carolina, another troublesome injury has reared its ugly head once again.
Hopefully for Charles' sake, it won't be too serious. The Panthers are dealing with some injuries along their protection, with Ikem Ekwonu, Taylor Moton, and Lewis all unavailable right now. But at a time when every rep counts, the 2020 fourth-round pick cannot join them on the shelf.
Charles has always had the physical presence. Aside from a few flashes, he's just not put it all together yet. Opportunities are running out, and if injuries dent his hopes of making Carolina's 53-man roster, it will be nothing short of gut-wrenching after finally showing signs of life.
Uncertainty once again clouds Charles' status. And he'll be hoping for some good news in the near future.
