John Bates - Commanders TE

John Bates is a blocking tight-end specialist and nothing more. The Washington Commanders have decreased his involvement in the passing game following the arrival of Zach Ertz in free agency. Whether this is enough for the player to stick around beyond 2024 hasn't been determined.

The Commanders drafted Ben Sinnott, who looks like a capable blocker despite being used sparingly in the passing game. He's getting more involved and making the most of chances when they arise. The same cannot be said of Bates, who's stagnated at the worst possible time.

Bates is out of contract next spring with his future hanging in the balance. There's a chance Washington keeps him around as a No. 3 option depending on Ertz's status. But if the Commanders can find a better option via free agency or the draft, general manager Adam Peters won't hesitate to pull the trigger.

There is still time for Bates to improve his hopes. But if the Commanders continue to ramp up Sinnott's usage down the stretch, that will speak volumes.

Olamide Zaccheaus - Commanders WR

Olamide Zaccheaus was worth bringing into the organization this offseason. The wide receiver had a previous connection to head coach Dan Quinn from their time working together on the Atlanta Falcons. He was also cheap, which fit into general manager Adam Peters' intent to maintain financial flexibility in the coming years.

Zaccheaus earned a roster spot and started well enough. He was always going to be a rotational piece, but his prowess in the return game is another big reason why the Commanders brought him into the fold.

The former Virginia standout's usage has diminished in recent weeks. Zaccheaus got three targets against the Tennessee Titans, which amounted to nothing more than 14 receiving yards. His mistakes in the return game have also left a sour taste in the mouth on occasion.

Washington needs to find alternative options at the receiver position this offseason. Jayden Daniels is a franchise quarterback, so maximizing his rookie contract is crucial. What that means for Zaccheaus' future remains to be seen, but he'll need a formidable conclusion to the campaign to stand any chance of being re-signed.
