NFL insider dropped huge nugget on Kliff Kingsbury's head coaching chances
By Dean Jones
Kliff Kingsbury's been a head coach before. He wants to be one again. That could present a problem for the Washington Commanders when the 2025 hiring cycle begins.
The offensive coordinator's done a pretty decent job overall with the Commanders this season. Washington's offense was the league's most efficient earlier in the campaign. Things have tailed off slightly since, but Kingsbury's done a decent job with the options available.
This bears more significance when one considers the encouraging development of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The No. 2 pick credits Kingsbury heavily for his ability to adapt quickly to the pros. That sort of thing doesn't go unnoticed by teams looking for a new head coach to mold their promising young signal-caller.
Openings are already available. The New Orleans Saints and New York Jets are seeking new head coaches. Matt Eberflus' disastrous clock management on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions was the final straw for the Chicago Bears.
The NFC North outfit has some nice pieces in place. They also have No. 1 overall selection Caleb Williams, who's demonstrated enough flashes this season to suggest a productive career could be in the offing.
Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury linked with Bears head coaching vacancy
Chicago's head coaching vacancy is a coveted one. Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network revealed that the Bears are going to examine all the top candidates. He also highlighted Kingsbury as a name to watch given his previous connection to Williams from their time working together at USC.
"I expect them (Chicago Bears) to look at all the top candidates, with Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, and Mike Vrabel. But here's an interesting name to watch… Kliff Kingsbury. Of course, worked with Caleb Williams at USC. Now thriving as OC (offensive coordinator) with the Washington Commanders. He's certainly one to keep an eye on."

Kingsbury would probably find this tough to turn down. He knows Williams well and the pair formed a close relationship last season. His accomplished credentials with quarterback development can only mean good things for the Heisman Trophy winner in this scenario.
It's also worth remembering the solid position Kingsbury finds himself. The Commanders took a chance on the play-caller, swooping late to prevent him from joining the Las Vegas Raiders. He's found a home in Washington. Leaving after just one year is a huge call to make.
That said, head coaching chances don't come along every day. Striking when opportunities arise is essential in the NFL. Nobody knows what's around the corner. And in all honesty, Kingsbury's stock might not get any higher than this.
This is just speculation until further notice. However, the Commanders would be wise to get a contingency plan in place if Kingsbury does leave for a better opportunity elsewhere.
