Landmark alterations are coming to the Washington Commanders once again this offseason. And it seems the league is finally figuring out what fans have known for months about head coach Dan Quinn's first significant move.
Nothing much has gone right for the Commanders this season. The defensive failures have been at the top of the list, and quarterback Jayden Daniels hasn't been able to mask this unit's deficiencies as he did in 2024. The group is old, slow, and lacks consistency. This is a dangerous combination that opposing teams have exploited at will.
Quinn took over defensive play-calling duties from coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. Improvements have been fleeting at best, but the man in charge had to do something. His trusted ally wasn't motivating or preparing his players, and the Commanders suffered as a result.
League figures believe Commanders will fire Joe Whitt Jr., but what comes after that is unclear
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, citing sources around the league, revealed that the consensus opinion is that Quinn will fire Whitt after Washington's regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, what comes next, including whether he will continue to take the reins, hasn't been determined.
"League sources consider it likely that Washington makes a change at defensive coordinator after Joe Whitt Jr. was stripped of playcalling duties earlier this season. The Commanders are 31st in total defense. Injuries and a lack of pass rush personnel have contributed, but coach Dan Quinn faces a critical third season in Washington and appears poised to make changes. Quinn has been calling the defense; whether he continues to do so will depend on an offseason review."Jeremy Fowler
Whitt knew his demotion was coming. He's been around the league a long time, and it's a results business. He should also be aware of what comes next, and although Quinn is a loyal guy, he cannot let established relationships get in the way of progress.
Nobody is calling for Quinn's head yet, and rightfully so. He earned enough good graces last season to get the benefit of the doubt, especially with so many devastating injuries. But if the same trend continues in 2026, that's when his seat will begin to heat up.
As for Whitt? He's a solid coach with proven credentials. That should ensure he gets work somewhere, possibly as a defensive backs coach. It's where he's most successful and comfortable, but being a coordinator was a step too far outside of his comfort zone.
That much is obvious. Quinn won't like it, but he has to do the right thing for the franchise. And this starts with a change at defensive coordinator.
