New Dyami Brown report escalates chance of Commanders free agency departure

Dyami Brown is expected to have a strong market, and the Commanders now have Deebo Samuel Sr.

Trading for Deebo Samuel Sr. represented a low-risk acquisition for the Washington Commanders with tremendous upside attached. It also ticked off a big priority for general manager Adam Peters with the limited wide receiver options available this offseason.

One reporter believes this is also the reason why Dyami Brown will take his chances elsewhere when the legal tampering period commences.

Brown's looked to have half a foot out of the door in Washington. His first three anonymous campaigns left many wondering if the new regime would give him a chance. He did enough to make the roster, but the former third-round pick remained on the fringes within offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's schematic concepts.

Then, everything changed.

An unfortunate injury to veteran Noah Brown thrust the North Carolina product into the spotlight. This was his last chance to make an impression, and he seized it with both hands.

Brown became a focal point down the stretch and into the postseason. He made some exceptional catches and visibly grew in confidence. Aside from his costly NFC Championship game fumble against the Philadelphia Eagles, there was a lot to like about his raised contribution.

NFL reporter believes Commanders could be priced out of Dyami Brown extension

This won't go unnoticed by NFL teams looking to bolster their receiving options. Matthew Berry from NBC Sports believes the lack of free-agent options and this not being the strongest wide receiver draft class could be enough for Brown to get more than the Commanders are willing to pay. However, he thought prolific tight end Zach Ertz would be extended based on conversations at the NFL Scouting Combine.

"Teams are WR desperate and there are not a lot out there in free agency. Plus, this year’s draft class doesn’t have the same caliber of superstars like last year with Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., Marvin Harrison Jr. and (at least at the time it was thought) Rome Odunze. This is why you shouldn’t be shocked when Darius Slayton signs for what will seem like a ridiculous amount given his career production to date. Same for Dyami Brown. Speaking of Dyami Brown, expect Washington to bring back Zach Ertz but likely let Dyami Brown walk if the price gets too high, which it likely will be."

This seems to be a growing belief among the fanbase. Brown stated he wouldn't mind staying with the team, but the wideout was also excited to see what other opportunities arrived elsewhere. The Commanders covered their bases by acquiring Samuel — a legitimate, versatile weapon who instantly became the most prolific running mate Terry McLaurin's ever had in the receiver room.

That means the Commanders will be looking for complimentary pieces to work alongside McLaurin and Samuel. Luke McCaffrey is the only other receiver under contract, so extending someone like Noah Brown and adding a couple more dependable pieces via free agency or the college ranks should be enough.

Nothing has been confirmed one way or the other. However, it's not hard to read between the lines. This latest report suggests Brown will have a robust market. Peters probably thinks the same based on his bold trade to acquire Samuel.

It'll be interesting to see where he ends up.
