Adam Peters had to maximize every resource during the 2026 NFL Draft. His six incoming rookies still have to prove themselves at the next level, but everyone within the Washington Commanders seemed pleased by how things turned out in challenging circumstances.
The Commanders got a little bit of good fortune on a couple of occasions, which they needed. Peters focused on value and always took the best prospects available on his board. Washington didn't chase anything, preferring to let things unfold before making informed decisions.
The early reviews are seemingly positive. ESPN's respected draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. was among them, though the notoriously harsh grader gave the Commanders a B for their draft efforts.
Mel Kiper offers encouraging outlook for Commanders' 2026 draft class
Kiper thought some picks, including the seventh-round quarterback, went against the grain. However, he believes the outlook for first-round linebacker Sonny Styles gives this class a chance to make a considerable impact.
"Sonny Styles (fourth in my rankings) shows his former-safety self, using 4.46 speed and elite-level explosion to read the play and close in a flash. He doesn't miss tackles and chases down running backs before they can get to the edge. He's a high-floor, high-ceiling prospect who is going to make this team better. It was a really good start to the draft.
"Styles will be the centerpiece of this draft class, and he has the chance to be a really effective player for a very long time. I'm excited to see him team up with Frankie Luvu and Leo Chenal to shore up the team's struggling defense."
Peters was calculated. He was measured and disciplined, and he refused to panic amid the chaos. That is precisely what fans were seeking from Washington's front-office leader, and he delivered accordingly.
The Commanders' moves were deliberate. They found the right blend of high impact and long-term promise. Not every pick is going to reap rewards, but the athleticism, hunger, and scope for additional growth in the pros once again came to the forefront. And even though some established veterans departed this offseason, it remains a good environment in which to flourish for any rookie.
More importantly, the Commanders got stronger.
Nothing went right last season, but nobody is looking back now. This is all about pushing forward to make this organization a legitimate force once again. And if this draft class reaches or perhaps even exceeds expectations, it'll be all systems go.
Nobody could say that with any guarantee, of course. But the fact that Peters' third draft class in Washington was so well received by analysts spoke volumes.
Now, they must deliver the goods.
