The Washington Commanders are currently focusing on their staffing alterations after parting ways with both coordinators. However, general manager Adam Peters must also focus on his pending free agents.
Washington has the most out-of-contract players of any team in the league. Not everyone is going to come back. But in the case of veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota, the Commanders would probably like him to return for a third campaign with the franchise.
However, it may not be that clear-cut, especially after the subtle hint Mariota dropped during an interview with Scott Abraham from 7News DC.
Commanders should be bracing for Marcus Mariota's exit this offseason
It's clear that Mariota has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Washington. Still, it's also clear that the former Oregon standout would like the chance to be a starter again, especially after getting so much time on the field in Jayden Daniels' absence this season.
"First and foremost, I love it here. I love Q [Dan Quinn]. I love what they're building here, but it's kind of going to similar to what happened last year for me. Just take some time, see if there are options. I love to play, especially being in those moments this year, kind of solidified to me how much I just love being out there. So, we'll see what that looks like for me."Marcus Mariota via 7News DC

I asked Marcus about his future.
He told me, "first and foremost, I love it here...I love what they're building here...just take some time, see if there are options. I love to play." pic.twitter.com/T5OXYB9Mbx
I love to play.
Mariota would have almost no chance of that in Washington unless Daniels got hurt again. Hopefully, that won't be the case.
After getting the taste for starting action again, Mariota wants more. He's put out enough decent tape for another club to potentially make him a bridge option. At the very least, he could secure an opportunity to compete for a starting job somewhere else.
That could be enough for Mariota to depart the Commanders. Peters needs to make contingency plans, given how much time Daniels missed in 2025. While the hope is for better health outcomes next time around, Washington cannot leave anything to chance. A capable understudy is essential. And there is no room to cut corners with pressure building.
There is a chance Mariota comes back. He said that it would need to be a fantastic opportunity for him to depart if the Commanders offered him another deal. That's the best-case scenario, but if another team gives the signal-caller what he wants, he's going to jump at the chance.
That much is abundantly clear.
