Ahkello Witherspoon became the Washington Commanders' 14th new signing this offseason. The cornerback gives general manager Adam Peters a useful insurance policy before the 2026 NFL Draft, but what fans can expect from the veteran is undetermined.
On his best day, Witherspoon is talented. Peters knows him well from their time together on the San Francisco 49ers. He's got some solid previous production under his belt over his nine-year NFL career. There isn't much he hasn't seen, which will provide the Commanders some much-needed experience after Marshon Lattimore, Jonathan Jones, and Noah Igbinoghene all departed.
Hopes are high that Witherspoon can make a difference. However, this move also came with a strong warning from a Los Angeles Rams expert to temper expectations.
Rams expert offers cautionary tale to Commanders fans about Ahkello Witherspoon
Bret Suter of Ramblin' Fan acknowledged Witherspoon's positives. Even so, the writer believes his injury history makes him unreliable at best at this stage of his NFL journey.
"[Ahkello] Witherspoon established himself in the Rams' secondary as a plug-and-play contributor. He was a godsend in both 2023 and 2024 when he was virtually impossible to get off the field once he earned playing time.
"But injuries made him unreliable in 2025, and combined with other injuries, depleted the defense at the worst part of the season. When healthy, you can expect solid coverage. But good luck keeping him healthy. He is a solid addition to any team. But he will break fans' hearts if he is promoted to a starting role, only to be benched when injuries hit."
This isn't exactly breaking news. Witherspoon missed a ton of time with various concerning injuries. It's been one frustrating setback after another, and the best ability is availability.
Peters must have been suitably satisfied with his medical assessments during a recent visit. But after so many injuries demented the Commanders' chances of being competitive in 2025, fans are right to be apprehensive.
Witherspoon is coming to Washington with a chip on his shoulder. He'll have heard almost everyone writing him off due to unfortunate circumstances beyond his control. His signing shouldn't preclude Peters from drafting another cornerback, but it gives them a potentially dependable option if he finally gets a better run of luck on the health front
The Commanders will manage Witherspoon's preparations throughout the summer. They can ill afford him stumbling into the campaign, especially if they envisage a solid role for him within Daronte Jones' schematic concepts.
Staying healthy is key. If Witherspoon can do that, he's got a shot at becoming a factor. But the Commanders cannot leave anything to chance.
