Adam Peters made several massive splashes during his second offseason at the helm. Not all of them have paid off, but one blockbuster transaction stands out above the rest.
And offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury knows it.
The Washington Commanders shelled out significant draft compensation to secure the services of Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans. He's always been regarded among the league's most accomplished left tackles, but his time with the AFC South club fizzled out, and they decided the offer was too good to refuse.
Tunsil was confident he had plenty of good football left. He was right. The former Ole Miss standout has been an absolute rock on the blindside for Washington this season, providing exceptional pass protection and crushing run blocking when early momentum is generated. The penalties are still too high, but he's been a revelation aside from that.
Kliff Kingsbury lauds Laremy Tunsil's impact since blockbuster Commanders trade
Kingsbury was gushing in his praise of Tunsil, proclaiming that he's had a much bigger impact than the coach initially envisaged. The play-caller also thought that the five-time Pro Bowler was more than deserving of the money expected to come his way this offseason.
"He's been phenomenal, more than I could have ever expected, I'd say. Just the type of person, the type of character, the way he works, the way he leads the young guys… And the play speaks for itself. It'd be hard to find one who has played better at that position this season. He's gonna get a lot of money."Kliff Kingsbury
Although Tunsil has one more year left on his deal in 2026, the Commanders must resolve this matter urgently once the campaign concludes. He's an elite player — a genuinely elite presence on the offensive line and the best left tackle Washington's had since Trent Williams. He's not getting any younger, but offensive linemen tend to play well into their thirties.
The Commanders' extension of Tunsil could also save them money on their 2026 cap. There is minimal risk involved here. Any player could get hurt, but the 2016 first-round pick has been durable and prolific throughout his career. And if Washington's record were a little better this season, he'd be firmly in the All-Pro conversation.
Kingsbury just said what every Commanders fan already thought. Tunsil was a magnificent addition in every conceivable way. He's going to get paid this offseason. The cost to acquire him was steep, but the rewards have been there for all to see.
Whether Kingsbury is around next season is anyone's guess. But Peters would be wise not to overcomplicate things with Tunsil, who is a franchise cornerstone in no uncertain terms.
