Kliff Kingsbury could stick it to Commanders with sneaky free-agent reunion

This makes a lot of sense if the money works.

Kliff Kingsbury is reportedly joining the Los Angeles Rams in a prominent offensive staff position under head coach Sean McVay. Things may have ended poorly with the Washington Commanders, but this may be the best possible environment to learn, grow, and galvanize his career.

The lack of interest in Kingsbury was a wake-up call. Teams might have been wary that his scheme would become easier to figure out the longer he stayed with an organization. Head coach Dan Quinn wanted changes, and the play-caller was unwilling to budge. Now, he'll get the opportunity to assist McVay and NFL MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford in getting over the hump.

And Kingsbury's presence in Los Angeles may prompt one of his key chess pieces on the Commanders to join him in a different environment.

Kliff Kingsbury and Deebo Samuel could reunite on the Rams if Commanders don't re-sign WR

Deebo Samuel Sr.'s one year in Washington was a success. The Commanders sent a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers to secure his services, which went about as well as anyone hoped in difficult circumstances. He's a free agent this spring, and it remains to be seen whether general manager Adam Peters will offer him another deal.

There are merits to keep Samuel around, but only if the price is right. He's dependable, has familiarity with Jayden Daniels, and is still producing decent numbers. But if he's looking for a fresh challenge or the money doesn't work, Washington will let the former South Carolina standout take his chances elsewhere.

The Rams could be a logical landing spot, returning him to the California sunshine and reuniting him instantly with Kingsbury. Puka Nacua is their undisputed No. 1 wideout, and Los Angeles would probably like to re-sign Davante Adams. Even with this prolific duo, adding someone with Samuel's versatility and ability to work underneath could be an option for McVay's squad to consider.

They might be looking for younger or cheaper options. The Rams may also have just one more season with Stafford under center, so they will likely push all their chips into the middle. If Samuel is willing to take a little less to land on a contender, it makes sense.

Kingsbury will vouch for Samuel if his name comes up in discussions regarding potential targets. He was highly complimentary of the receiver in 2025. He slotted into his scheme effectively and was also the one real constant amid countless injury problems. Adding him to the Rams' high-tempo offense wouldn't hurt, but whether the financial package would be tempting enough is something else entirely.

As for the Commanders? They'll be ready for anything this offseason. And even though things didn't go well during the previous campaign, confidence in Peters's ability to do what's required remains high.
