The NFL world was rocked to its foundations when John Harbaugh's 18-year tenure as Baltimore Ravens head coach ended after the AFC North club failed to make the playoffs. That put him at the top of the lists for head-coaching vacancies and potentially with franchises on the fence about making changes.
Coaches with Harbaugh's credentials don't come around too often. His glittering accomplishments speak for themselves, and teams will be falling over themselves to make him an offer he cannot refuse in the not-too-distant future. This could provide a unique opportunity for the Washington Commanders if other dominoes start to fall elsewhere.
According to multiple reports, Harbaugh's representatives have received calls from nine NFL teams about his potential interest. Considering there are only six vacancies open — not counting the Ravens, of course — that means other head coaches could be on the chopping block.
One of those is rumored to be Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. He led a decent-enough finish, but the campaign overall failed to meet expectations. Most thought he would be safe, but Harbaugh's availability has significantly changed the dynamic.
Obviously, nothing has been confirmed one way or another. It's a fluid situation with several more turns ahead. But if the Dolphins do end up parting ways with McDaniel in favor of Harbaugh, he should immediately become the Commanders' top offensive coordinator candidate after firing Kliff Kingsbury.
McDaniel and head coach Dan Quinn have a strong bond. He was there through some dark days, helping him find the stepping stones he needed to get to where he is today. If the Dolphins cut ties, he would likely consider the chance to link up with his mentor in Washington once again.
Even though McDaniel has struggled to generate the required momentum as a head coach in recent years, he's an exceptional offensive mind. His innovative offense looks tailor-made for quarterback Jayden Daniels. He also has the laid-back, progressive demeanor that resonates with modern-day players. At the same time, the Commanders cannot wait around for fear of losing the chance to speak with other possibilities.
Harbaugh's departure from the Ravens has completely altered the NFL landscape. Meetings were quickly arranged, and calls were made. He should have his choice of destinations, so whether he'd consider Miami as a viable destination in its current flux remains to be seen.
If he does, the McDaniel will be gone. And that's when the Commanders can strike.
