The 2025 NFL Draft is just under a month away. The Washington Commanders only have five picks, but it's still a good chance to give their playoff ambitions another boost.
And in this mock draft scenario, general manager Adam Peters got a gift from the football gods he wasn't going to waste.
Peters has done a great job this offseason. He's enhanced the roster and weeded out which players he should let go or re-sign for the right price. It's been an eventful few weeks, but the hard work isn't done just yet.
There are still several holes left to fill for the Commanders. The offense needs more weapons, both in the running game and the passing game. Washington's offensive line depth needs a boost. The defense is still in dire need of pass rushers and secondary help.
Peters and the rest of the front office have their work cut out for them. The Commanders only have five selections in the 2025 NFL Draft after trading for Deebo Samuel Sr. and Laremy Tunsil. Not exactly ideal, but there could be more if the front-office leader works out a trade-down at some stage.
Commanders select Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan in CBS Sports' latest mock draft
Pete Prisco from CBS Sports just released his first mock draft of the offseason. The veteran NFL analyst had the Commanders capitalizing on an alarming slide from most projections, taking Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan at No. 29 overall.
"They traded for Deebo Samuel, but he's playing the last year of his deal. They need a young receiver to help grow with Jayden Daniels. McMillan is a big-bodied receiver who would help."Pete Prisco
McMillan stands at 6-foot-5 and 212 pounds. His size and playing style has given him pro comparisons to stars like Drake London and Mike Evans. It would be a bombshell of epic proportions if he made it this far down the pecking order.
The prospect accumulated 84 receptions on 130 targets for 1,316 receiving yards and eight touchdowns for the Wildcats last season. This season earned him an 84.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus and saw him touted as the best wideout in this year's class by most.
Although the offense now boasts a receiving duo of Terry McLaurin and Samuel, the Commanders need a young receiver who can be Jayden Daniels' go-to guy for the next decade. That is what McMillan can be.
McLaurin will be the top target for the next few years, but he is getting up in age. Samuel only has one year left on his contract. Even if he is extended, it would only be for another couple of years at most.
The 2024 first-team All-Big 12 receiver can play all over the field —whether that be as the prototypical X receiver or as a big slot due to his large route tree. McMillan is a big play waiting to happen that uses his body frame to make physical catches, especially in the red zone and down the field. This was proven by his 60 percent contested catch success rate in 2024.
Adding McMillan to the receiving room would give the Commanders arguably the best trio of pass-catchers in the NFL. This would be a huge upgrade compared to last season when it was McLaurin and a bunch of role players.
The likelihood of McMillan sitting at No. 29 overall is not high. But due to his draft stock somewhat falling recently, there is a chance of it happening. Not running throughout the draft cycle and only weighing in with 31 1/2-inch arms at the NFL Scouting Combine is seeing some added scrutiny come his way. However, it wouldn't take the Commanders look to turn in their card if this scenario came to fruition.
McMillan could be exactly what the Commanders' offense needs. Just don't bet on him being there by the time Washington goes on the clock.
