The Washington Commanders are playing for little else other than pride over their remaining four games. It's been one catastrophe after another this season, but fans are going to find out a lot about how much resolve remains in the locker room over this stretch run.
And if defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw's comments are any indication, established figures on the roster will also be keeping a close eye on developments.
It would be easy for the Commanders to throw in the towel. They've won just three games this season. They have lost eight in succession. Bodies are aching, and the end is in sight. However, with massive roster alterations on the not-too-distant horizon when the offseason commences, there is still a lot to be decided.
Javon Kinlaw challenges Commanders teammates to show some heart down the stretch
This was magnified by Kinlaw's comments during an interview with Scott Abraham from 7News DC. The free-agent signing said he'll know who has the correct desire and who doesn't by the time these final four engagements are negotiated. But he's confident the group's determination remains to salvage some respectability from the campaign.
"It's very important. For one, to see who got heart and who doesn't, you know what I'm saying? That's what it's about. When you ain't playing for nothing, it's different. You really see who's got heart and who don't. Like I said before, all these guys around here got heart. I think we're going to come out and try to play to win every game. It don't really matter."Javon Kinlaw via 7News DC

Kinlaw isn't without blame. He has not justified the lofty contract he signed with the Commanders this offseason, but there is no chance he'll be cut. That might change in 2027, but until then, he'll be casting a keen eye on the attitude of players, highlighting which ones he can rely upon in pursuit of turning the tide next season.
That should be something for fans to monitor on game days, too. They can see who is putting in the effort. They can see who isn't making progress or taking plays off. And if they can see it, those in power can too.
This is all about showing some personal pride. The Commanders have four division games left — two of which are against the only NFC team good enough to stop them from reaching the Super Bowl last time around. Show some character, stay together amid the turbulence, and they might be able to exceed expectations the rest of the way.
But if some are already thinking about their vacations or what comes next, that will tell Kinlaw and Washington fans all they need to know.
