It's been a rags-to-riches story so far for Jacory Croskey-Merritt. When most prospects would have accepted their fate and potentially thrown in the towel, the Washington Commanders running back proved that he is made of sterner stuff.
Everything happens for a reason. Croskey-Merritt may not have liked it at the time, but he ended up in the right place. And there was enough inner fire within to make his presence felt when most didn't believe in his capabilities.
Croskey-Merritt earned his spot on the 53-man roster comfortably. He became a cult hero among the fan base. More importantly, he can turn on the style when reps come his way in a competitive setting.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt reveals secrets behind rapid rise to Commanders stardom
The No. 245 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft has gone from an afterthought to an essential part of the team's running back committee. It wasn't easy, but Croskey-Merritt credits staying engaged and being blessed by ending up in Washington as reasons behind his immediate surge to prominence.
"Basically, I missed my whole senior year. While I was at Arizona, I was able to play one game, but after playing one game, you know, I still just stuck around, did scout team, you know, help our guys get better, and, of course, work on myself. I fell to the seventh round, but I feel like that was definitely a blessing for me. I don't look at it as a bad thing because I'm a Commander, and, like, I totally take pride in that, and I don't think I could have went to a better team."Jacory Croskey-Merritt
The NCAA couldn't hold Croskey-Merritt down. His lowly expectations and even lower depth chart standing upon joining the Commanders didn't, either. This is a fiercely ambitious individual who believes in himself and is passionate about the game. It's no surprise that this regime in Washington was so intrigued, and even though it's early days, the payoff could be substantial if the same trend continues.
Croskey-Merritt's rollercoaster journey to get himself to this point will also ensure complacency doesn't creep into his approach. He knows how quickly things can be taken away. This holds more significance in the cutthroat world of the NFL, so maintaining and exceeding these high standards should enhance his chances of a successful career.
Based on initial impressions, the Commanders have a steal of epic proportions on their hands. And for Croskey-Merrit, the destination was just as important as the journey.
