Throughout free agency, the Washington Commanders have addressed several critical team needs. But there is still more to do before attention switches toward preparations for the upcoming campaign.

The Commanders brought in help on the offensive line (Laremy Tunsil), defensive line (Javon Kinlaw and more), defensive backfield (Jonathan Jones and Will Harris), and wide receiver depth (Deebo Samuel Sr. and Michael Gallup).

What's left? The position that everybody seems to forget about, and yet one that can make or break a team's season like few others on the field.

The kicking spot.

Washington had four different players attempt kicks last season. Zane Gonzalez was ultimately settled on following the injury to Austin Seibert. To his credit, the former seventh-round pick did an admirable job stepping in after being out of the NFL for three years, making five of his seven field goal attempts and all 17 extra points.

However, he also does not have the world's strongest leg and especially struggled on kickoffs. Gonzalez is likely not Washington's long-term kicker of the future, and the Commanders should be expected to bring in competition over the offseason.

Longtime veterans such as Nick Folk and Matt Prater remain available as free agents. There is also the option to try out a youngster for the role. It seems like Washington is entertaining the latter.

Commanders reportedly take interest in kicking prospect before 2025 NFL Draft

The Commanders held a private workout for draft prospect Andres Borregales from the University of Miami — one of the top kickers in this year's class. Though it's not often that kickers are drafted, it's never unreasonable to take a flyer on one in the sixth or seventh round depending on the situation.

The Commanders could find themselves in that position, assuming they address their other, more important needs (namely running back) earlier in the draft. They'll only be picking five times, barring additional trades, and that includes two late-round selections at No. 205 and No. 245 overall.

If Borregales impressed Washington's brass enough, he could be viewed as an option there provided he remains on the board.

There is no understating how essential a strong special-teams game is for an aspiring Super Bowl contender. A kicker probably isn't ever going to singlehandedly win you any games, but they can sure be the biggest reason you lose.

Washington lacked a reliable presence at the position in 2024. Part of taking the next step may involve going all-in on what the Commanders hope can be an automatic leg for years to come.
