The Washington Commanders are embarking on their biggest game in decades. Dan Quinn's squad travels to the Detroit Lions for a place in the NFC Conference championship game. Their backs are against the wall in a hostile environment, make no mistake about that.
This is nothing new for the Commanders. They've overcome the odds and passed almost every test with flying colors this season. It's been a phenomenal start to the new regime's rebuild, but nobody wants the fairytale run to end at the Divisional Round stage.
The Lions are the No. 1 seed and should be well-rested following their bye week. They have a devastating offense that can blow out any team when in the mood. Aaron Glenn's defense is missing some key personnel, but the coordinator is a gifted strategist who'll have a plan in place to make rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels' life uncomfortable.
It's the biggest challenge Washington has faced so far. Nobody expected them to get anywhere close to this point, so playing with a sense of freedom and enjoying the occasion could be enough to keep this more competitive than most think.
Do the Commanders have enough to pull off one more major upset and shock the NFL world? Or will the Lions live up to their billing en route to the final four?
Commanders vs. Lions game details
- Date: Saturday, January 18
- Time: 8.00 p.m. ET
- Venue: Ford Field
- TV channel: FOX
Although the Commanders are heavy underdogs heading into the clash, they have a good record over the Lions throughout franchise history. However, the tide has undoubtedly started to turn between the NFC adversaries in recent years.
Washington leads the all-time series 31-16 against Detroit, which doesn't mean much considering how different the two teams look now. The Lions have won four of their last five meetings against the Commanders, including a comfortable 36-27 victory when they last met in 2022.
But again, this is not the same Commanders team that languished in mediocrity or worse throughout Ron Rivera's head coaching tenure.
