Commanders signed Eddie Goldman
The Washington Commanders made one splash early on their defensive front. Javon Kinlaw signed a three-year, $45 million contract with $30 million guaranteed. Most saw that as an overpay, but Adam Peters believes his size and power can help them counteract what the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line brings to the table.
That wasn't all. Washington added to its interior options with the signing of Eddie Goldman on a one-year deal. This is nothing more than a depth piece, but the veteran should be relatively fresh compared to most 31-year-olds upon further examination of his recent career trajectory.
Goldman opted out of the COVID-19 season in 2020. He came back with the Chicago Bears the following year but retired immediately after. The Atlanta Falcons scooped him up after a two-year hiatus, where he manned rotational duties last season to work his way back.
There's no chance Goldman will unseat Kinlae, Daron Payne, and Johnny Newton from the top three defensive tackle spots. If the Commanders draft one from a deep class of college prospects, it'll push him further down the pecking order.
- Signing grade: B
This signing doesn't come with many guarantees about involvement from the outside looking in. But Goldman is experienced and has connections to the area, so he'll be eager to make an impression.
Commanders signed Jonathan Jones
The Commanders needed another dependable cornerback to go alongside Mike Sainristil and Marshon Lattimore. Adam Peters waited a little while before making his move, signing Jonathan Jones to a one-year deal.
Jones was a prolific performer for the New England Patriots, winning two Super Bowls along the way. He emerged from undrafted free-agent irrelevancy to become a solid veteran with strong leadership credentials. This is exactly the sort of addition Peters has coveted heavily since becoming general manager.
The former Auburn standout had a down year by his typically high standards in 2024. It was hard to look good on the Patriots last season, so Jones will be relishing the prospect of being on a contender once again. This also fits into Washington's new win-now mode with its Super Bowl window open.
Jones, Lattimore, and Sainristil have the makings of a productive cornerback trio if they stay clear of any major injury issues. Jones worked his way up under Bill Belichick. No player does that without having something about them. Hopefully, there is still some good football left and he can make a lasting contribution.
- Signing grade: A
This could be another tremendous piece of business by Peters. Jones is a model professional with accomplished production under his belt. That's only going to help Washington's secondary on and off the field.
