Commanders re-signed Jeremy McNichols

Most fans were expecting some alterations to the running back room this offseason. While that might still be the case, the Washington Commanders' need is less urgent after re-signing Jeremy McNichols.

The veteran was No. 3 on the depth chart behind Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler last season. McNichols flashed explosiveness when called upon, although his production was never jaw-dropping by any stretch. The Commanders are giving him another look in the hope he can improve within another season in the same schematic concepts.

With the Commanders also placing an exclusive rights tender on Chris Rodriguez Jr., the top four running backs from last season are returning. That shouldn't stop Adam Peters from examining a rich crop of college prospects this spring, but it takes the pressure off somewhat. It's a big vote of confidence for McNichols, who was widely projected to be searching for alternative employment by analysts.

This doesn't come with any roster guarantees. McNichols will have to earn his spot yet again. However, he's in a stronger position than last offseason with regular-season carries and system familiarity.

  • Signing grade: B

McNichols doesn't move the needle all that much. Even so, the Commanders retained a nice insurance policy if they didn't have enough draft capital to acquire another backfield threat.

Commanders re-signed Marcus Mariota

Marcus Mariota's influence on the Commanders last season cannot be overstated. While the backup quarterback played well on the field when called upon, his influence on Jayden Daniels behind the scenes became an integral part of the rookie's incredibly smooth transition.

Mariota knew pretty early on that he wouldn't be the starter. He embraced the mentor role, providing Daniels with another strong support system throughout the campaign. One only has to see how the Heisman Trophy winners spoke about each other as proof of their strong bond.

Considering Mariota's production when called upon, many fans were nervously wondering whether he'd get a chance to start elsewhere. The former Oregon star got several offers according to reports, but he opted to re-sign with the Commanders on a one-year deal that could be worth around $8 million.

Having this stability around Daniels is only going to help. The Commanders also know that if their No. 1 signal-caller is forced to miss time, they have one of the league's best backups ready and waiting.

  • Signing grade: A+

This is a win for the Commanders. Mariota's experience will help Daniels while also providing assured production if his number is called. That's all anyone could ask from a veteran understudy.
