With the Washington Commanders' final of three preseason contests on tap against the Baltimore Ravens, we're about to find out who will — and won't — make the team's final 53-man cut. And there will be some difficult decisions involved in that process.
One of those centers on Dyami Brown, who is staying the course and focusing on what he can control before general manager Adam Peters decides his fate.
Figuring out the wide receiver dynamic will be tricky. After the high-profile addition of Stefon Diggs, Washington has at least seven or eight wideouts who have shown they're good enough to play in the NFL. But not all of them will get to stay.
Dyami Brown is taking the right approach to Commanders' roster uncertainty
Brown is well aware of this. And the Commanders' 2024 playoff hero is preparing himself for the unenviable scenario.
"At the end of the day, you put tape out there for all 32 teams, not just one team. So you know, just go out there and do what you do."
The receiver was drafted by the Commanders in 2021 and spent his first four seasons with the team prior to an ill-fated stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year. Now he's back where he started, with one last chance to save his NFL career.
However, Brown is no longer the No. 2 or No. 3 option that he was two years ago. He's firmly on the bubble, despite a strong training camp.
Brown is well aware of the situation he's in. But he is running out of time to do something about it.
Diggs and Terry McLaurin are obviously locks, as is third-round rookie Antonio Williams. Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane excel in their roles as special teams returners, so you can count them in as well.
That leaves only one or two more spots available, depending on how many receivers Washington elects to keep. Brown is competing with Treylon Burks, Van Jefferson Jr., and the surging undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley for a place on the squad, and there are no guarantees for any of them.
If Brown does end up being released, he'll be a top name to watch around the league. He's certainly talented enough to earn a shot somewhere, especially once the season wears on and teams lose depth to injuries.
Brown isn't just auditioning for the Commanders. He's auditioning for the rest of the NFL, and his positive attitude about it will take him a long way.
He can't control the decisions front offices make. Brown can only control the production he puts on the field.
Everything after that is out of his hands.
The North Carolina product has done all he can to elevate himself this summer. Now, we await Brown's fate for the 2026 season.
