The Washington Commanders are moving forward with a new defensive philosophy under coordinator Daronte Jones. And he has already achieved something that Joe Whitt Jr. never could.
While the Commanders are not going to give up all their secrets in front of reporters and fans at training camp, the defensive shift is seismic. The pressure packages are creative, the defensive alignments are confusing the offense, and the aggression being displayed is night and day to the unit that was the league's worst in 2025.
This is precisely what the Commanders had in mind when they took a chance on Jones. And everyone has bought in.
Commanders' defensive revolution already making serious waves at camp
General manager Adam Peters revamped the defensive unit in free agency and the draft. The Commanders are younger, faster, and much more capable of meeting Jones' schematic demands. They are making their presence felt at camp, and although David Blough's offense is holding its own, this competition is only going to make both sides of the football better.

Compare this buzz to last season. The defense was old, slow, and completely devoid of inspiration. Whitt couldn't find the right answers, and everyone rapidly lost faith in his capabilities. Things didn't get much better when head coach Dan Quinn called plays, but a serious change in approach was desperately needed.
Jones has the innovative ideas. He has the motivational techniques. And perhaps more importantly, he has the right personnel in place to put his ambitious plans into action.
As expected, the Commanders have primarily run a 3-4 base defense. There has been a sprinkle of 4-3, but the way Jones is working to manipulate havoc in the backfield is easily the most impressive element from camp so far.
It's something many expected, especially after working under Brian Flores with the Minnesota Vikings. And it's been refreshing to see glimpses of this coming to life over camp.
Again, the full system will not be revealed in camp or the preseason. But that's what makes it so exciting.

Staying healthy will be crucial for this group. They have the talent, and there is a real hunger to capitalize on the opportunities to shine more frequently in Jones' scheme. There are a couple of problem areas that might hold them back, but the initial signs of this revolution are immensely encouraging.
Fans heard a lot of big talk from Whitt without much substance to back it up during his two years in Washington. Jones is a man of action, and his methods seem to be resonating extremely well with his new-look unit so far.
The proof will be in the regular season. But for now, Jones has already made the best early statement imaginable.
And if the Commanders make the desired defensive improvements this season, Jones will quickly become a hot name on the head-coaching cycle.
