Daring Commanders-Steelers trade idea no longer fits Adam Peters' timeline

It's time to try a different approach.

Adam Peters hasn't been shy about making trades since becoming general manager. The Washington Commanders may want to adopt a different approach this offseason, especially after a five-win campaign in 2025. At the same time, nothing should be completely ruled out at this stage.

Nobody expected the Commanders to acquire wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. for a fifth-round pick. Nobody expected Washington to land five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans. If Peters believes there is a move out there that could help this franchise get back on track, he won't hesitate to strike with conviction.

There is a need for the Commanders to get younger and more explosive, especially on defense. But if new coordinator Daronte Jones wants to hit the ground running, Washington must find a productive edge rusher with proven credentials at some stage this offseason.

NFL analyst's trade idea for T.J. Watt doesn't match the Commanders' current outlook

Jarrett Bailey of Sporting News thought calling the Pittsburgh Steelers about T.J. Watt could be precisely what head coach Dan Quinn is looking for. There are concerns, and it's a lot of money to take on, but the projected second-round pick might cost to acquire the four-time All-Pro may be a risk worth taking.

"Washington could look to add a proven star on defense this season, and it should be at the top of their to-do list. If they were to look for a star pass rusher in the trade market, the Pittsburgh Steelers could be a name to watch [T.J. Watt]. Washington doesn't have a second-round pick in 2026, so perhaps a 2027 second-round pick could entice the Steelers, as next year's class is expected to be deeper."

Watt's been among the most prolific pass-rushers of the modern era, gaining 115 sacks in nine years. Last season was his worst since his injury-plagued 2022 campaign, a sign that his performance may be starting to dip. He'll also be 32 in October, so it represents another bet on an aging veteran when most fans want a shift in approach.

The Steelers would also be unlikely sellers. This trade idea would give Quinn and Jones what they need, but for how long? Pittsburgh is also not planning to rebuild after Mike Tomlin's prolific tenure as head coach ended, as evidenced by the team's decision to hire Mike McCarthy. This is all about retooling, and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham won't want to lose someone boasting Watt's credentials.

If the Commanders were right on the cusp of winning a Super Bowl, this would be more realistic. Plans have changed, and this should be reflected in Peters' strategy during his third recruitment period at the helm.

Watt is good; really good. Even so, a move like this just doesn't fit the Commanders' timeline anymore.
