This would go against the grain.

Big changes are coming, and have already taken place, to improve the Washington Commanders' defensive fortunes. There is a new coordinator and a plethora of new veteran signings, with more to come during the 2026 NFL Draft. But according to a recent report, head coach Dan Quinn may not be done there.

It seems as if the Commanders have moved on from veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner. He made a considerable impact during his two years with the club, but this relationship has run its course. Though this was necessary to get younger and more explosive, it leaves a gaping hole that must be filled.

Specifically, the Commanders need to find a new on-field general who can call plays and ensure everyone is in the correct position at all times.

Commanders considering taking the 'green dot' away from MIKE linebacker role

David Harrison of WUSA9 revealed that Quinn is actively considering taking the 'green dot' responsibilities from the MIKE (or middle) linebacker role. This goes a little against the norm around the league, but the reporter outlined three potential candidates who could make this bold move work if the coach pulls the trigger.

"Dan Quinn is actively considering moving the green dot away from the traditional Mike Linebacker, naming Frankie Luvu as a prime candidate from the Will spot. With Daronte Jones's defense requiring the play caller to rarely leave the field, newly acquired safety Nick Cross (96% snap rate in 2025) emerges as a highly viable communication hub.

"Jordan Magee has spent two seasons shadowing Bobby Wagner's green dot duties, giving Washington a homegrown, developmental option in the middle."

Frankie Luvu would probably be the most likely candidate. He's got the experience and is an integral part of the team's strategy next season. At the same time, adding extra responsibilities to his shoulders could affect his ability to be instinctive.

Harrison also mentioned Nick Cross and Jordan Magee as candidates for the job. They come with more risk, but they couldn't be dismissed entirely. And if Quinn wants to go completely off-base, he might even consider giving the task to one of the potential options at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Caleb Downs' football IQ is absolutely off the charts. If the Commanders go down this route, he's more than capable of taking charge from the moment he steps onto an NFL field. Sonny Styles is another strong candidate, and his well-rounded traits could be another intriguing option for Quinn to consider.

This is a pivotal decision Quinn and new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones cannot afford to get wrong. And if they opt to think outside the box a little bit, fans should trust their judgment until further notice.
