Dan Quinn just torched Kliff Kingsbury's seat without lifting a finger

Speculation continues to rise around the Washington Commanders and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury going their separate ways this offseason. The play-caller is reportedly going to get head coaching consideration. Still, reports also suggest he could be made surplus to requirements regardless of whether he gets a top job elsewhere.

This unsurprisingly came up during head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters' exit press conference. The answer told fans all they needed to know — albeit in the most indirect way possible.

Instead of publicly declaring their support for Kingsbury, they deflected. And that only swirled the rumor mill further about what the next few months will hold.

Commanders' silence on Kliff Kingsbury spoke a thousand words

Quinn decided to say a whole lot of nothing, bringing all the coaches together for an evaluation that will hopefully provide the answers needed to get this franchise trending in the right direction once again.

"We're going through all of the coaches. Kliff [Kingsbury] offensively, defensively, on the [special] teams side. And so, that's really what we are digging into to find what's best, how we do it, you know, where do we find spaces to improve? And you know, for Kliff, for Joe [Whitt Jr.], for Larry [Izzo], for all of us. Like that's our main focus, so we're never in this space again, and that's what we want to dig in hard on."

This veiled attempt to avoid answering the question effectively didn't go unnoticed. JP Finlay from NBC Sports couldn't get away from the answer, concluding that it may lead to something more troubling down the road. That's to be determined, but Kingsbury's future in Washington looks shakier than ever after failing to get a vote of confidence from the two people in charge of deciding his fate.

Kingsbury would jump at the chance to be a head coach again. He resisted the temptation last year, given that the Commanders were in playoff contention. That won't be the case this time around, with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants reportedly seeking permission to speak with him in the not-too-distant future.

Quinn could have put these rumors to bed by outlining his confidence in Kingsbury. He didn't, perhaps for the first time in two years. That spoke volumes, and fans should brace themselves for an epic shake-up.

Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota both voiced their support for Kingsbury, underscoring how much they enjoy working with him. Quinn did not offer the same, which was the most telling thing of all.
