The dream is over.
Most Washington Commanders fans knew what head coach Dan Quinn was waiting for before appointing a new defensive coordinator. They concluded that he was biding his time for someone in the current head-coaching cycle. And there was one name above all else generating headlines.
The Commanders caused a stir around the league by bringing in Brian Flores for an interview. He knew general manager Adam Peters well from their time together on the New England Patriots, and there was enough intrigue to hear Quinn out.
Flores is still in the mix for the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers' head-coaching vacancies. The Minnesota Vikings were always highly confident they could retain his services if he didn't do enough to earn a promotion. As it turned out, head coach Kevin O'Connell was right to be bullish.
Commanders' next move is critical after inevitable Brian Flores snub
The Vikings confirmed that Flores has signed a contract extension to remain with the club. If he doesn't secure either of the two openings in the AFC North, he'll resume his role in Minnesota. And as expected, O'Connell couldn't hide his delight.
"Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximize their impact on the field. The identity of our defense is a reflection of his leadership and preparation. On a personal level, I've really valued the relationship we've built over the last three years, and that shared trust, alignment and high standard will continue to be critical to our success."Kevin O'Connell via Vikings.com
This is a blow for Quinn and the Commanders. But for fans, securing someone with Flores's exceptional credentials was always a long shot.
The Commanders had to wait for official confirmation. Flores' reputation and aggressive defensive tendencies would have been a breath of fresh air. But with Quinn wanting to stay involved on the defensive side, coupled with a complete lack of quality on the playing personnel and his familiarity with the Vikings, this was always the most likely scenario.
For the Commanders, it's back to the drawing board. There are several openings that would intrigue coordinator candidates, and Washington may be further down the list than ever. Quinn is highly respected around the league, but there is now a need to strike quickly. And he must tap into the strong bonds he built during his time in the NFL to bring in the right candidate.
Flores was always on the more ambitious side. It didn't work out, but Quinn should not be criticized for taking a massive swing.
But make no mistake; the significance of Quinn's next move cannot be overstated.
