The Washington Commanders are on the lookout for a new offensive coordinator after parting ways with Kliff Kingsbury. Relationships had become strained, and rumors of a disconnect with general manager Adam Peters were rife before the move. Now, it's about finding the correct replacement to help take this franchise up a notch.

Head coach Dan Quinn is under enormous strain to turn the tide. If he doesn't get his next appointments right, he'll pay with his job. Shortlists are currently being devised, but one bombshell development around the league could see a close former associate go right to the top of Washington's list.

Despite leading a mini-turnaround down the stretch, the Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Mike McDaniel after four years. Speculation immediately surfaced about whether this decision came after the Baltimore Ravens parted ways with John Harbaugh, but ESPN's insider Adam Schefter refused to confirm it.

Commanders should make Mike McDaniel their top priority to replace Kliff Kingsbury

McDaniel's time in Miami may have ended on a sour note, but he's one of the league's brightest offensive innovators. His scheme balanced the run and pass, using creative concepts that kept defenses on their toes. Putting superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels into this system comes with mouthwatering potential.

While the Commanders would have competition for McDaniel from around the league, his previous connection to Quinn could provide Washington with the upper hand.

There is a strong bond. McDaniel credits Quinn for helping him get through some tough times throughout his career. It goes way beyond football, and he's publicly stated that he will always be indebted to the Commanders' leading man for always believing in him.

McDaniel wouldn't be where he is without Quinn. It's also worth remembering that he was part of the famous Mike Shanahan coaching tree in Washington, so there is already familiarity with the organization. The Dolphins don't make this move if Harbaugh doesn't become available, and he should immediately become the Commanders' priority No. 1.

Give him whatever he wants financially. Money should be no object for Josh Harris, especially given the lack of a salary cap for coaches. Other teams can do the same, but this already-developed relationship with Quinn — a mentor and role model for McDaniel — coupled with the chance to work with Daniels, makes this a no-brainer from Washington's standpoint.

If he wants to take a break from being a head coach again, the Commanders should be all over this. And the need to strike quickly cannot be overstated.
