The Washington Commanders and Kliff Kingsbury went their separate ways. Although it wasn't surprising after rumors about disconnect surfaced, it did seem like a drastic measure from head coach Dan Quinn in his quest to get things trending up.

Attention now turns to who will replace Kingsbury. Several intriguing candidates are already being bandied about in the media. It could be a coveted opening thanks to the presence of quarterback Jayden Daniels, but there are a lot of moving parts and a whole lot of unknowns right now.

The importance of what comes next cannot be overstated. Dan Orlovsky of ESPN went one step further, proclaiming that it's the most pivotal decision in the NFL, capable of shaping the 2026 campaign for good or bad.

Dan Orlovsky turns up the heat on Dan Quinn as Commanders' future hangs in the balance

Orlovsky was stunned, especially if there was no head coaching job lined up. Couple this with the need for Daniels to take off again, the Commanders' personnel needs, and who Quinn chooses to replace Kingsbury, and it cannot be seen as anything other than critical.

"If he's leaving just to leave, this is a pretty significant move from Washington. It's now the most pivotal decision that will be made in the NFL when it comes to the offseason and what the 2026 season looks like. Jayden [Daniels] and this team took a significant step backwards last season, and there were a lot of reasons why, but who is going to replace Kliff Kingsbury? Because the third year for the rookie quarterback is the expected year. There are some pieces Washington needs, but who will fill that role to take Jayden and that offense to the next level?"

This shouldn't come as a shock to Washington fans. Quinn is now out of scapegoats. He's not quite in the lame duck coaching category yet, but it won't take long for that to shift dramatically if improvements don't arrive in 2026.

Fans are cautiously optimistic. Quinn's got strong connections around the league. Daniels is another obvious selling point, as is wide receiver Terry McLaurin, and an improving offensive line. But this would be a good time for some forward thinking, some innovative ideas, and someone who can provide the energy that's been sorely lacking.

Quinn has placed all the pressure on himself. His coordinators and other staff members are gone. Several veteran players will also bear the brunt of the team's failings. There is nobody left to blame, and Orlovsky's comments are something the head coach should also realize before a tenure-defining few weeks.

Buckle up...
