The shockwaves are still reverberating around the NFL after the New York Giants traded defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II to the Cincinnati Bengals. This could also affect the Washington Commanders, and not just when they face their NFC East rivals twice a season.
As part of the blockbuster transaction, the Bengals sent their first-round pick at No. 10 overall to New York for Lawrence. This was seen as an exceptional return for the Giants, which now gives them two top-10 selections for head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen to use.
And according to one respected insider, there is smoke building around a dynamic offensive weapon who could potentially be an option for the Commanders.
Commanders can't do anything but wait as Giants boost their draft hand
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network revealed how much time Giants general manager Joe Schoen has spent with Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson in recent days. It might not come to anything, but the insider believes this trade now gives them the freedom to take the plunge on an uber-gifted yet injury-prone wide receiver.
"Giants GM Joe Schoen flew to Arizona to attend Jordan Tyson’s workout yesterday. Schoen also had dinner with Tyson the night before. With NYG at 10 after the Dexter Lawrence, Tyson’s odds of being a top 10 pick have now increased significantly.
"Which is not to say Tyson can’t go earlier than 10. He could go 5, even. In 2022, Joe Schoen and the Giants took Kayvon Thibodeaux at 5 because they knew they’d get Evan Neal at 7. Weren’t positive it would’ve played out the other way. A few ways for Schoen to play it now."
The Commanders have also taken an interest in Tyson. They brought him in for a pre-draft visit and sent a contingent to his individual workout on Friday after injury prevented him from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine. But if he is on the shortlist, the Giants could easily get in there first with the No. 5 pick, should they wish.
Tyson is arguably the best wideout in this class, but there are red flags. He dealt with countless health problems in college. Though everything seemed to go according to plan during his showcase in front of league personnel, where he will be taken will depend on the results of his medical checks.
With two first-round picks, the Giants now have flexibility. Considering the Commanders don't pick again until the third round at No. 71 overall, they have no margin for error.
It's a waiting game. But it's not hard to read between the lines here.
