Terry McLaurin didn't hold back after breaking his silence regarding his current contract stalemate with the Washington Commanders. The Pro Bowl wide receiver feels disrespected and undervalued, which fanned the flames of an increasingly concerning situation just before training camp.
McLaurin is trying to handle things professionally, but it's evident that feelings have been hurt by the Commanders' approach to negotiations. That led one veteran teammate to launch a staunch defense of the player and highlighted just how respected he is by his peers.
No Commanders fan who watched the clips from McLaurin's media availability came out of it feeling good. This is a franchise cornerstone being treated like an expendable commodity. There's been no contact over the last month, and the two sides remain far apart. That could change quickly, but there's just no telling for sure right now.
Terry McLaurin has locker room support amid Commanders' contract standoff
The former third-round pick out of Ohio State has stayed in touch with head coach Dan Quinn throughout the process. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is firmly behind the wideout as he looks to get his money. There is support in the building, but general manager Adam Peters is looking for the sort of deal that benefits the organization.
Another who came to McLaurin's side was Jeremy Reaves. The All-Pro special-teams ace, who got an extension from the Commanders this offseason, gave his teammate a huge confidence boost by outlining his influence on the field and in the locker room as traits that are highly revered.

This is a problem the Commanders could have done without. But it's one they've brought on themselves.
McLaurin might be 30 years old in September, but he's among the league's best. That didn't show signs of regressing last season. If anything, he only got better with a legitimate franchise-caliber presence under center to depend upon.
Just why the Commanders are stalling is anyone's guess. Perhaps it's the annual salary demands, perhaps it's the guarantees, perhaps it's the deal's length, or perhaps it's a combination of stumbling blocks preventing the second-team All-Pro from signing on the dotted line. But it needs a successful resolution, and quickly.
This will go down to the wire, but it'll still get done. Doubts are growing after McLaurin's outburst, and rightfully so. However, this race has not been fully run just yet.
Peters still has time. He doesn't have much of it if McLaurin wants to be on the practice field at training camp, so adding an extra sense of urgency to this equation wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.
Because if McLaurin hands in a trade request or is made to wait all summer for his deal, the ripple effect could be catastrophic.
