The NFL is a cruel business.
One minute you're the toast of the town. And the next? You're getting criticized from all angles.
Undrafted rookie running back Robert Henry Jr. has now experienced the flip-flopping nature of the league firsthand over the last couple of weeks. And the fast riser now faces a testing few days before his fate with the Washington Commanders is eventually determined during final cuts.
Robert Henry Jr. had contrasting fortunes in Commanders' first two preseason games
Henry blazed a trail this offseason. The UTSA product may have felt it was unfortunate not to hear his name called during the 2026 NFL Draft, but the Commanders thought he could offer something to their crowded running back depth.
He's made some encouraging strides, boosting his hopes of securing a spot on Washington's 53-man roster when Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles arrives. Henry was also among the standout performers during the Commanders' preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, which is always the best way to get noticed.
Momentum was building around Henry. Unfortunately for the player, things trended the other way versus the Detroit Lions in preseason Week 2.
The first-year pro only got four carries at Ford Field, gaining minus-three rushing yards. Henry caught his only reception for five receiving yards, but he fumbled a kickoff return that eventually resulted in a Detroit turnover.
These are the fine margins that make a big difference in roster decisions. Henry isn't completely out of the fight just yet, but it'll take a massive effort from here.

Robert Henry Jr.'s most likely destination remains the Commanders' practice squad
If he's kept hidden and has little to no involvement, he'll likely be on the team. But if Henry is gaining the lion's share of carries deep into the second half, that won't exactly be the greatest sign.
The Commanders will take through Jacory Croskey-Merritt and free-agent signing Rachaad White. Sixth-round rookie Kaytron Allen hasn't shown much in the preseason, but he brings a physicality aspect nobody else possesses. And even though Jeremy McNichols is injured right now, his leadership and special teams value should see him on the team.
That won't leave room for anyone else, including Henry.
Realistically, a place on the practice squad remains the best-case scenario for Henry. This will allow him to continue his development and potentially make a difference if he gets called up to the active roster. He was probably hoping for more, but it's not a bad consolation prize if others are preferred initially.
Henry has already experienced the highs and lows of playing in the NFL, and he's only played two preseason games. Everything is a learning experience right now, and getting this harsh lesson quickly should enable him to make the adjustments needed as his career progresses.
Hopefully, that will be with the Commanders in some capacity. There is too much talent within the player for any other outcome.
