Tyler Owens has always had the athletic traits to be a real difference-maker. Putting it together consistently remains the biggest stumbling block, but the improvements made under new Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones this summer were more than enough to book his place on the 53-man roster.
Another important factor in this equation deserves acknowledgment before a potential third-year surge from the safety.
With special-teams ace Nick Bellore bringing his 15-year career to an end before training camp, the Commanders need someone else to step up and become the alpha in this key area of play. Owens is looking for more reps on the defensive rotation, but he's also a strong candidate to fill the gaping void left by the Pro Bowler.

Commanders team writer Zach Selby raised this topic. He saw firsthand how much Owens is growing into a potential defensive contributor. However, he earned his spot primarily on special teams, which could again make up the largest part of his responsibilities.
"Not only is (Tyler) Owens developing on defense, but he shows leadership on the punt team and plays with physicality. Both Owens and (Percy) Butler are on the roster largely because of their special teams ability."
Owens is being utilized all over Washington's defense under Jones. There is a real desire to maximize his exceptional physical gifts, and the Texas Tech product is thriving with more responsibilities on his shoulders.
Getting him more involved on defense represents a journey into the unknown. At the same time, the Commanders will never know unless they throw Owens into the fire to see how he fares.

If it doesn't work out, Owens always has special teams to fall back on.
This is where his dynamism and instincts stand out. Owens is a physical hitter with the closing speed to reach returners or blockers quickly. His tackling technique is improving all the time, so keeping him on the squad was an absolute no-brainer.
But in a contract year, the pressure is on to take the next step.
Owens knows what a big opportunity awaits him in Year 3 of his professional career. He's made a new fan in Jones, and an opening for more reps could open up if the trend continues.
And if not now for the 2024 undrafted free agent, then when?
Athleticism will only get you so far. Production always takes center stage, and Owens has a ton of it on special teams. That might be his saving grace, but the defensive back wants much more.
What comes next depends on Owens. It's clear his ceiling is nowhere near being reached. But if he wants to become more than just a specialist, repaying the faith being shown in him by Jones cannot be overstated.
If Owens can do that, the Commanders might just have a shocking breakout candidate on their hands.
