Commanders' surprise standout can force Adam Peters into a cut-day rethink

The Washington Commanders conclude their preseason engagements against the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Dan Quinn won't play the healthy starting options, who got a lot of work in joint practice, but there is still a lot to fight for.

And for veteran cornerback Darius Rush, he stands to gain arguably more than anybody by finishing Washington's warm-up slate on the front foot.

Daronte Jones is getting a much better tune-out of the defense. The new coordinator's work with the defensive backs saw him rise through the coaching ranks relatively quickly, and the same trend has continued in Washington if glowing reports over the offseason are any indication.

Darius Rush could make Commanders' roster after a strong end to the summer

Rush is the latest example.

The former South Carolina standout has come alive at the perfect time. Rush is long, fast, and physical. He's tracking the football much better, and his recovery techniques are also growing. While his place on the roster isn't set in stone, he's given himself a fighting chance.

And with 2025 second-round pick Trey Amos practicing just once this offseason due to a fractured fibula and ankle sprain, there could be an opening to make the team.

Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, and Rasul Douglas are roster locks. If healthy, Amos is as well. That perhaps leaves one or two spots for the rest, and Antonio Hamilton Sr. has too much special-teams value to not take through onto the 53-man roster.

In this scenario, there would likely be one spot remaining. And in all honesty, five might be enough if Quan Martin and Tyler Owens spend more time as a big nickel corner when the situation dictates.

Rush's status is hanging by a thread. But he couldn't be doing much more to get noticed, with final cuts looming large for general manager Adam Peters and Quinn.

The 2023 fifth-round selection once again caught the eye during Washington's joint practice with the Ravens. It was a disappointing day for the Commanders overall, but Rush was among the notable standouts.

At 6-foot-2 and almost 200 pounds, Rush has the size and length to make things extremely difficult. He's mirroring receivers well and is making plays on the football. He can also help on special teams, which is vital for anyone lower down the depth chart.

A productive outing versus the Ravens in Washington's preseason finale might just book his spot on the team.

If not, then a place on the practice squad wouldn't be a bad consolation prize for Rush if he doesn't do quite enough to make it.

Focusing on what he can control is key.

Rush has experience in facing adversity in precarious situations, so he'll know how to handle himself in the coming days. But momentum is everything at this time of year, and he's got more than most after turning up the intensity over the summer.

Whether it's enough to make the team is another matter. But don't count Rush out just yet.
