Commanders spiral toward a history-making disaster no one can ignore

This is certainly not ideal.

The Washington Commanders' season has been a complete failure. And things might get much worse before they get better.

To say this season is a disappointment would be an understatement. The Commanders went 12-5 in 2024 and made the NFC Championship game. They found their franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels and had fresh faces leading their coaching staff and front office. It was supposed to be the dawn of a new era in Washington. Instead, it now feels like it was all just a dream.

How historically underwhelming has Washington's season been? They're a game away from making the worst kind of history.

Commanders have already tied an NFL record that nobody wants to own

With its eighth defeat in a row, Washington tied the 1990 Cleveland Browns for the longest losing streak by a team that qualified for the championship game the previous year. That group went 3-13, and head coach Bud Carson was fired after nine games.

The Browns snapped their skid at eight games with a 13-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 15 of that season. If the Commanders lose to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium this weekend, they'll set a new low.

Either way, it's a damning reflection of everything that has gone wrong for Washington this year.

The Commanders have been snake-bitten by a laundry list of injuries. Most of the healthy players are old and slow. The pieces they're counting on as core building blocks have inexplicably regressed.

Washington's schedule has been much more difficult than it was in 2024. Coaching schemes, particularly Kliff Kingsbury's offense, are not keeping up with the adjustments the rest of the league has made. Most of all, luck has not been on the Commanders' side. All of the little things that went their way in tight games a year ago are now working against them.

As a result, all of the positive vibes are gone.

It's back to the tired "same old Washington" self-pity that has dominated the nation's capital for the past 25 years. After everyone and everything that could be tied to the Dan Snyder era was purged from the franchise, it's the absolute last thing the Commanders needed.

Things were supposed to be different here now. Maybe it still can be in time. But right now, the Commanders find themselves sharing a piece of historic NFL infamy with the godforsaken Browns.

That is not where anyone expected them to be.
