Commanders' shift away from Von Miller could open door to unexpected NFC fit

This seems logical.

The Washington Commanders needed to address their pass-rush urgently this offseason. General manager Adam Peters delivered, signing three new faces to go alongside Dorance Armstrong Jr.

This was imperative and welcomed in equal measure. Unfortunately, it inevitably signaled the end of Von Miller's time with the club after just one season.

Miller was the Commanders' sack leader in 2025 with nine. He outlined a desire to remain in Washington, but the need to get younger was too glaring. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame edge rusher remains on the proverbial scrap heap, but one NFL analyst believes the Green Bay Packers would be a logical landing spot.

Von Miller touted as ideal fit for Packers as Commanders move on

Garrett Podell of CBS Sports thought Miller would be a good stopgap until Micah Parsons reaches full health. After that, he could be a decent situational rusher, and the Packers' veteran signings this offseason make it a plausible possibility.

"[Von] Miller makes plenty of sense on the Packers, given Micah Parsons' situation. Parsons is recovering from a torn ACL. Miller would be an ideal addition to hold down the fort at the edge rusher spot opposite former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness until Parsons gets back.

"Even though Green Bay is known as a team that can be free agent-averse, general manager Brian Gutekunst signed veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to hold down the fort until Devonte Wyatt can return from his injury. Miller would be a similar signing."

Obviously, teams will want to navigate the draft first before deciding on any further action. The Packers don't have a first-round pick this year after trading for Parsons. They are in win-now mode, so Miller makes sense if they need more on the defensive edge.

There is almost no chance of Miller returning to Washington. Peters spent big money on Odafe Oweh. He acquired K'Lavon Chaisson on a one-year deal with the promise of more to come if everything goes well. Charles Omenihu is a versatile piece for the rotation, and Armstrong is reportedly making good progress from an ACL injury that ended his breakout campaign ahead of time.

If more is required, Peters will go down the draft route. He's got the money for another free agent, but the four top options represent the biggest upgrade imaginable. Miller served a purpose last season, but he is no longer needed.

At the same time, Miller's production last season suggests he could have one more good year left before retirement. And if the Packers did come calling, that would be a difficult proposition to turn down.

Even if the Commanders have clearly moved on.
