The Washington Commanders are looking to secure a sweep over the New York Giants this weekend. And in a season where not much has gone right for head coach Dan Quinn's squad, this would provide some solace amid the doom and gloom.
If the Commanders' season has been awful, one could make a strong case that the Giants' year has been even worse. They currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They are also looking for a new head coach after firing Brian Daboll. Things are not looking good right now, but this is expected to be one of the most coveted openings available.
One respected analyst touted a possibility, and Commanders fans, and everyone else around the NFC East, cast a wry smile of glee. And if it comes to fruition, this could be the move that gets Giants general manager Joe Schoen fired.
Commanders fans can only laugh at proposed Giants head coaching candidate
Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated thought the Giants might make an interview request to Kevin Patullo. He's the under-fire Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, taking severe criticism for the Super Bowl champion's anemic scheme and lack of invention. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the New York media would be unlikely to take this development well if it were rubber-stamped.
"[Kevin] Patullo’s strength is his ability to think big picture. Nick Sirianni has leaned heavily on the longtime NFL assistant for his ability to help build a staff and craft larger-scale decisions that can impact the team. From that standpoint, Patullo has been instrumental in helping the Eagles survive myriad coordinator and personnel changes over this run of unprecedented success in Philly. With the Giants’ job being open, it would be a surprise if a division rival did not bring him in for an interview."Conor Orr
Patullo is a well-respected coach, but he looks out of his depth as a coordinator. Fans have long called for him to be removed from his duties, but head coach Nick Sirianni is standing firm. Nothing seems to be getting better, so just why he's being considered among the potential head coaching candidates is anyone's guess.
This would be a hilarious turn of events. The Commanders have their own problems to fix, but their task would be made easier if Patullo got the Giants' job. That seems highly unlikely, but it's something worth monitoring at the very least.
It would be a bombshell of epic proportions if Patullo got an interview, let alone a head coaching job. At the same time, Schoen isn't exactly known for making wise decisions, so nothing should be dismissed.
