Adam Peters keeps the cards close to his chest at all times. The Washington Commanders' front office is being run with much more professionalism and no major leaks are emanating from the building these days. But that doesn't mean others around the league don't talk.
One insider revealed that the Commanders are already plotting a painfully obvious pivot depending on how the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft shakes out in front of them before the No. 29 pick.
Peters only has five picks heading into the draft. The general manager felt disposing of assets was worth it to bring the likes of cornerback Marshon Lattimore, wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., and left tackle Laremy Tunsil. This signified the Commanders were quickly turning from a rebuilding team to a contender with quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels under center. And it put everyone on notice.
While Peters' preference is building through the draft, he was right to shift course. There are always scenarios that could arise that will provide Washington with more selections, but this is largely dependent on whether any suitable offers arrive.
Commanders actively seeking trade partner for the No. 29 pick according to Dianna Russini
According to Dianna Russini from The Athletic, Peters is working hard to make this a possibility. The respected insider confirmed via sources on 106.7 The Fan that Washington is actively working the phones in pursuit of finding a trade-down partner for the No. 29 pick. That won't be confirmed until they go on the clock, but agreements in principle can be made behind the scenes if a specific prospect is available.
This is something fans have considered possible for some time. It's not a draft loaded with elite blue-chip prospects or standout quarterbacks. However, it is a draft where starters and valuable contributors can be found right through the process. And Peters proved last spring that he's adept at finding top-level performers and rough diamonds successfully.
Peters is trying, but the Commanders' chances will improve if one of the quarterbacks is still around. Cam Ward will go to the Tennessee Titans at No. 1 overall. All bets are off aside from that.
Projections are sketchy for Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, and Shedeur Sanders. Some are touting that Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe could sneak into the first round if a team becomes desperate enough. And it only takes one.
The Commanders have no such panic. They've already solved their complex riddle under center with Daniels. Exploiting those with the desperation Washington experienced for decades is the best to to get maximum value.
That's the cold, hard nature of this business we all love. And the Commanders have the right man steering the ship at long last.
