No team can ever have enough offensive linemen. The Washington Commanders have found that out to their cost over the years, but things are looking up now.
There are some concerns, especially at left guard and center. General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn will let things play out, but if they decide more is desired, there is an intriguing development that may not go unnoticed.
After a long, grueling road back from a torn Achilles, versatile offensive lineman Brady Christensen is ready to return. The 2021 third-round pick revealed to Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer that he has been given the all-clear to resume football activities, which should provoke some interest around the league.
The Carolina Panthers could bring Christensen back, but getting the chance to start might be more desirable after working so hard to reach this point. Whether the Commanders could offer that is debatable as well, but it wouldn't hurt to check in and find out for sure.
Washington has two bookend tackles in Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly Jr. They have one of the league's best right guards in Sam Cosmi. Competitions are ongoing at left guard and center, so Christensen does make sense.
The former BYU standout can play anywhere along the protection. Christensen carved out this niche for himself, emerging as extremely dependable wherever he lines up. This is always a highly coveted trait around the league, and it might not cost much to bring him on board.
Christensen is coming off a serious injury. He's confident there will be no further complications, but teams will want to cover the bases if the medical checks are satisfactory. The Panthers are probably in the driver's seat, given they've kept in touch with the player since his contract expired, but his return to Carolina is far from a done deal.
As previously mentioned, the Commanders wouldn't lose anything by calling to see where Christensen stands and what he wants from his next challenge. If he's content to be a backup, that could mean he stays in Carolina. If he wants a fresh start and a chance to compete, Washington can provide exactly that.
Every avenue must be explored. Every stone must be overturned, and nothing should be off the table when it comes to making the roster improvements needed. After all, getting complacent is what cost the Commanders so dearly last season. Fans will not tolerate that again.
Christensen is versatile. More importantly, he's a good player. And if this is the end of his injury problems, the Commanders could do far worse than examine his credentials in greater detail.
